Of all the majestic scenery in the West, some of the most inspiring and colorful is in southern Utah. This tour through three national parks, Zion, Bryce and Capitol Reef, provides an opportunity to capture the stunning canyons and colors of the region in one trip. We have been traveling through the region hiking, camping and photographing for over thirty years and have discovered both well known and hidden places that afford the best photographic views and settings to be found in the region. We begin our trip in Phoenix, Arizona and head north to experience the magnificent canyons of northern Arizona on the way to Zion national park. (Private tours can be arranged to start in Las Vegas.) We will visit many of the prominent points that are seen by tourists visiting the park, but will also travel to many of the seldom seen places that make this stunning canyon country so extraordinary. In Zion we will be looking up most of the time, as that is the nature of the access there, but soon we will be leaving the deep canyons and our comfortable lodgings for a different view.

Our second stop is in the Bryce Canyon area, with short hikes to a ghost town, the Red Rocks of the area, and then into Bryce Canyon itself. One can spend days hiking and photographing this incredible park, and still miss much of what it has to offer. Its magical orange and mauve and red stone is brilliant in the bright sun, and very subdued on a cloudy day, but there are ways to capture this landscape even when the sun is hidden above the clouds. Our tours are scheduled to visit this incredible site during the summer and warmer months, but we can also arrange to take you there in the most incredible season of all – the winter when the colors are beyond the usual palette of what we experience anywhere else. After spending our time looking down into these colorful canyons, and visiting the other locations around the park, we will head north again for yet another experience.

The last park in this odyssey is Capitol Reef, one of the least visited parks in the West, but the one that has more repeat visitors than any other. We first ventured out West and hiked and photographed in this unique park when it was still a national monument in 1969, and have been revisiting it for decades. If one just travels the usual route that most visitors follow, the result will be very gratifying, but if you travel with us we will take you to locations that include the best known as well as the hidden and remote parts of the park that make it a standout for those who take in this wonderful jewel in Utah.
